Among a wild beet (Beta sp.) collection of 101 accessions, material with resistance to the leaf spot disease of sugarbeets (Cercospora beticola Sacc.) was detected. Twenty-six days after artificial inoculation the total mean rating in annual wild beets of mainly Mediterranean origin was 4,96 compared with 3,68 in biennial types from the northwest Atlantic coast, Annual material was thus more heavily damaged, Strikingly, the most promising material originates from highland areas in Turkey and Transcaucasia (11 accessions of B, corollifora) and from the UK (1 accession of B. vulgaris subsp. maritima from the Severn estuary) where the leaf spot disease seldom occurs. This paper presents the evaluation data and discusses problems related to screening ofwild beets under field conditions and the meaning of such data documented by genetic resources information systems.
