This study was conducted to evaluate the cross irregularity of husk and straw distribution on axial and tangential combine harvesters (Case IH 2188 and John Deere 2264, respectively) in real operation during 3 harvesting seasons in July and August 2001, 2002 and 2003 in the Czech Republic. Both harvesters were evaluated under normal operating conditions for winter wheat and rape. The measurement for rape was conducted only during two harvesting seasons (2001 and 2003). It was found that the amount of straw seemed to be higher for the John Deere combine harvester than for the Case IH combine. On the other hand, the amount of husks and other small particles seemed to be higher for Case IH than for John Deere. From the winter wheat measurement, the amount of plant residues was highest in 2001. The amount of straw was almost the same for both machines in 2001 and 2003, but in 2002 a higher amount of straw was observed after the John Deere combine harvester passage. The amount of husk and other small residues was higher after the John Deere passage in 2001 and 2002. Results indicate that cross irregularity of husk and straw distribution probably depends on the instantaneous amount of harvested material. The more amount of material, the worse regularity of husk and straw distribution.
