Newcastle port shipped a total of 91.4 million mt of coal in 1,056 vessels during the 2008 calendar year, an increase of 7.6% on the 84.4 million mt it shipped in 2007. A total of 8.3 million mt was loaded on to vessels in December 2008. The average time taken to turn around vessels fell to 12.9 days in 2008 compared with 22.6 days in 2007, according to statistics for the month of December released by Port Waratah Coal Services, Newcastle's operator.
