Wesfarmers’ met coal production falls nearly 10% in first half year

Curragh coal mine operator Wesfarmers increased its earnings to A$250 million ($250.7 million) in the first half 2010 financial year ending December 31, up from just A$2 million in the same 2009 period on significantly higher coal prices, even though record rainfall in Queensland had reduced its coal production by nearly 10% during the period. In its first year results statement issued February 17, Wesfarmers said metallurgical coal sales for its Curragh mine in the 2010 first half year were 3% lower than the corresponding 2009 first half at 3.15 million mt, while the Queensland mine’s production of saleable metallurgical coal was 9.9% lower at 3.1 million mt.
