Indonesian FOB thermal coal prices continued their ascent November 8 as South Korean power utilities solicit coal for 2011 requirements and Chinese buyers brace themselves for a feared severe winter spell. Taiwan Power considered most offers in its spot ten- der as steep and has so far awarded prompt contracts for only four panamax shipments, although it received 26 offers in a tender for 15 panamax shipments. One trader estimated Indonesian coal with a calorific value of 5,700 kcal/kg GAR in the “mid-$90s.”
