US polystyrene producers were moving ahead with planned price increases despite a recent softening in crude oil prices. The US crude price fell to near $77.60/barrel on Wednesday, down $1.40 from the previous day, and $5 lower than the January peak near $83/barrel. “There is still a cost-push from oil now, even with the lower prices,” a production source said on Wednesday. “We’d have to see crude prices fall below $70 before we saw some reasonable relief.” The market was suffering from a shortage of styrene, the source said, which was adding to the need for higher polystryene prices.
