Pace of economic recovery to remain moderate: Ben Bernanke

New York — The Federal Reserve expects the pace ofeconomic recovery in the US to remain moderate and leavesopen the possibility of additional easing if necessary, BenBernanke, chairman of the US central bank, said in preparedremarks to Congress Wednesday. "FOMC members' judgments that the pace of the economic recovery over comingquarters will likely remain moderate, that theunemployment rate will consequently decline onlygradually, and that inflation will subside are the basis for theCommittee's decision to maintain a highly accommodativemonetary policy," Bernanke said. "Real gross domesticproduct (GDP) rose at about a 2% rate in the first quarter ofthis year, and incoming data suggest that the pace ofrecovery remained soft in the spring," Bernanke said.
