Asian PET bottle grade chip prices were assessed $5/mt higher week on week Wednesday at $1,670/mt FOB Northeast Asia and $10/mt higher at $1,675/mt FOB Southeast Asia as prices of key feedstocks such as purified terephthalic acid and monoethylene glycol continued to rise. PTA prices increased $13/mt or 1% week on week Wednesday to $1,284/mt CFR China, while MEG rose $3/mt or 0.2% over the same period to $1,242/mt CFR China. Despite the uptick in price, demand for PET bottle chips remained weak, a Northeast Asian producer said. Demand also typically dips during the current Ramadan month in the Middle East and Asia and in late summer in Europe. But South America was a bright spot this week, with an increase in inventory there, where it is currently peak demand season, a market source said. On an FOB NEA basis, the bid-offer range was $1,650-$1,700/mt this week. But prices are expected to decrease in the next 1-2 months in Europe and the US due to the current macroeconomic uncertainty, according to one market source.
