US spot styrene prices increased week on week, though there was mixed sentiment in the market Friday as to the direction of spot prices for the remainder of August. A deal was heard done Monday at 70 cents/lb from producer to producer while benzene that day had been assessed slightly over 430 cents/gallon. Feedstock benzene peaked Tuesday, and then fell mid-week as crude prices dip below $90/barrel. Likewise, styrene spot values peaked at over 69 cents/lb during the week, then edged down to end the week in a range of 68.50-69.00 cents/lb for the 3- to 30-day assessment. “The market is very mixed, polystyrene demand is supposed to be getting stronger too,” said one market participant Friday. “We will have to watch this [market] daily as it’s changing quickly, “ the source added.
