At the eastern end of the Black Sea,BP is gearing up for a rare exercise in deep sea oil exploration,drilling in waters up to 2,100 meters on the basis of seismic evaluation alone.BP is planning to start drilling the first of two exploration wells in December and,unlike deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico or Brazil,there are no adjacent oilfields in shallower waters to provide firmer knowledge of what might be encountered. Hugh McDowail,a BP vice president for exploration,told Ptetts the drilling locations,which have yet to be announced,are being decided on the basis of 2-D seismic conducted in 2002 and 2003 and 3-D seismic done last year by one of the world's largest survey vessels,the Norwegian Ramform Challenger.
