US key to greenhouse gas reduction: study: Improvements cited for car and light truck fleets

The US transportation sector accounts for about one-third of US green-house gas emissions, and the sector must be included in any serious effort to reduce these emissions, according to a report released May 29 by the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. Improving the fuel economy of the US car and light truck fleets offers the greatest potential for reducing carbon dioxide emis-sions from transportation over the next 15 to 30 years, said David Greene, a fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and one of the Ridge National Laboratory and one of the report's authors, told a press briefing. "There is no reason not to begin now," he said.
