SoCal Gas’ Aliso Canyon reduces emissions; politicians demand more

Southern California Gas managed to reduce the amount of gas leaking from the Aliso Canyon storage facility by more than half, according to preliminary methane emissions estimates posted January 12 by the California Air Resources Board. A subsidiary of Sempra Energy, SoCal Gas has worked to plug the leak at a malfunctioning well at the 86-Bcf storage facility since October 23. Data collected by CARB on January 8 found emissions slowed to 23,400 kilograms per hour, or 14.71 MMcf/d.
