Through the Troubled Heart of Central Africa by Road (Central African Safari)

The following is an account of how we spent our three weeks local leave last year on a marathon road safari from Kenya to the Victoria Falls, Kariba Dam and back home via the Congo. The round trip was 4800 miles of which about 1500 miles was good Tarmac, 1000 miles good gravel, 500 miles loose sand, 500 miles loose rocks, 300 miles mud, and the rest (mainly in the Congo), a mixture of mud, rocks, potholes, sand, water, lava, etc. resulting in the most appalling surfaces that one could have the misfortune to drive on. We were also one of the last tourists to be allowed to motor through the Congo. The Border was closed the day after we entered!
