摘要

Herbivore-induced plant volatileemission is often considered to beattacker species-specific, but most experi-mental evidence comes from short livedherbaceous species. In a recent study weshowed that black poplar (Populus nigra)trees emit a complex blend of volatilesfrom damaged leaves when they areattacked by generalist gypsy moth(Lymantria dispar) caterpillars. Minornitrogenous volatiles were especiallycharacteristic of this blend. Here weshow that attack onP. nigraby a beetlespecies,Phratora vulgatissima(Coleop-tera, Chrysomelidae), led to the emissionof the same compounds as alreadyobserved after caterpillar herbivory, butwith striking quantitative changes in theblend. The consequences for attraction ofherbivore enemies are discussed.
