A three-step design procedure is proposed for the design of heat exchanger networks (HENs) for batch/semi-continuous processes. This consists of the initial individual design, the rematching design and the final overall design. Firstly, for every time interval, the conventional methods for continuous processes can be used directly to develop the initial individual designs. Based on the information provided by this design, the second individual designs are then performed by focusing on the optimal rematching of streams for maximum use of the common exchangers. Finally, the overall design is obtained through some adjustments of area, energy exchanged and configuration of the HEN for further optimization of the whole system. The information on rematching is obtained by solving an MILP model-the transshipment model developed specifically for batch/semi-continuous processes. A case study is provided to demonstrate the design procedure and its effectiveness. [References: 18]
