Evaluation of foliar fungicide treatments for control of leaf rust of wheat in Alabama, 2008.

The soft red winter wheat cultivar Red Ruby was planted at a seeding rate of 120 lb/A, in Decatur silt loam 2 Nov 07 in 10 x 20 ft plots consisting of 14 rows with 7-in. spacing at the Tennessee Valley Research and Extension Center, Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, Belle Mina, AL. The previous crop was wheat with summer fallow. After planting, 20 lb/A 34-0-0 was applied 19 Nov. Ammonium nitrate was applied 19 Feb at 80 lb N/A. The experimental design was a randomized complete block that was replicated four times. Foliar fungicides were applied at Feekes' growth stages 8 (31 Mar) and 10 (18 Apr). Fungicides were applied with a CO2 pressurized backpack sprayer at 40 psi delivering 12.9 gal/Afrom four X-6 hollow cone nozzles spaced 20 in. apart and 15 in. above the canopy. Leaf rust severity was rated on the flag leaf of 10 randomly selected plants in each plot on 7 May and 13 May. Plots were harvested on 17 Jun, and yield and 1000kernel weight determined. Data were subjected to analysis of variance followed by mean separation using Fisher’s protected least significant difference (FLSD) with P=0.05.
