The physical reasons of the incredibly intense and brilliant white coating flakes of some species of beetles have been recently discovered. The Cyphochilus, a relative of the common Asian 'Beetle', has a property which cannot be neglected: the body is coated with a layer of microscopic flakes of an extremely deep white, like a sheet of paper or a coat of paint with a thickness which is more than ten times greater. This special property has been investigated by a group of researchers from the National Institute of the Optical Research Council (Ino-Cnr), the European Laboratory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy Lens of the University of Florence and of the University of Cambridge who were able to explain the strategies adopted to achieve this amazing result, outlining the future of a new generation of more efficient and more ecofriendly materials and paints. The results were published in 'Scientific Reports'.
