Dibenzoate Technology as Plasticizers and Coalescents for Adhesive and Coatings Applications

Plasticizers and coalescents have long been used to enhance film formation and other properties in coatings, ad-hesives and plastics. In recent years, formulators have sought alternatives to the phthalate and high VOC choices that have traditionally been used. The dibenzoate ester chemistry satisfies both criteria - lower VOC materials that by their nature are non-phthalates. They have been utilized for decades as plasticizers and more recently as coalescents for numerous applications. Newer dibenzoate technology offers a viable alternative to the traditional choices in paint, coatings, OPVs, ink and adhesives. This paper provides an overview of the performance of dibenzoates in two important latex applications: adhesives and paint.
