Many laws bar unlawful discrimination against "Applicants for Employment" as well as existing employees. Unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, creed, age, gender or national origin is widely understood to be contrary to law. However, there are many lesser-known antidiscrimination protections for employees and applicants for employment. Employers often overlook the fact that decisions to not hire particular persons could be subject to challenge on a lot of different grounds. Employers who work under contracts with the federal government, for instance, are acutely aware of their duties to avoid all unlawful discrimination with respect to applicants for employment. In addition to the traditional protections affecting employers generally, aggregates producers need to bear in mind protections that job applicants have under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act.
