A specific bin or hopper, when full, contains a finite amount of material. However, regarding the more cost-effective storage method of stockpiling, determining capacity may be less trivial. Stockpile volume varies per conveyor length, stockpile height and stockpile configuration - so much, so that producers may often find themselves scratching their heads for intricate geometry and trigonometry formulas, while seeking the aid of charts, slide rules, calculators or computer software programs. The first common stockpile parameter is stockpile height, which is based on conveyor length and incline. A good rule of thumb to remember is that at an 18 - 20 degree incline, a conveyor discharge height is about 1/3 of the conveyor length. So, for example, a 90-ft. conveyor at 18 degrees has about a 30-ft. discharge height.
