In March 1987 this column was called Safety Notebook and was written by Dave Meyers. Dave cited a story about a farmer who went to a wise old man and asked for help to revitalize an unprofitable farm. The wise man (guru, in today's jargon) wrote a charm on a slip of paper and sealed it in a box with a simple instruction. "Carry the box into every corner of your farm three times a day for the next year." The advice was painless enough so the farmer followed it. In the fields he found a hired hand sleeping instead of working. In the barn he found cows in filth, and the horses unfed. Before dinner he checked the kitchen and found the cook wasting food. Before retiring he carried the box to the hen house and found the door open.
