Survey of the market quality of peaches grown in Romagna: evaluation methods and possibility of improvement.

Quality parameters (weight, soluble sugar content, titratable acidity, firmness) of harvested fruits of 50 peach and nectarine cultivars, grown under conditions of Integrated Peach Production in Romagna, Italy, during 1999, were determined. Comparedwith peaches, nectarines generally showed greater fruit firmness, higher soluble sugar and titratable acidity percentage and lower fruit weight. The later the harvesting date, the higher the soluble sugar content and weight of fruits. Although more than92% of fruits were satisfactory for size and soluble sugar content, over 50% were too firm (more than 5 kg/cm2). It was concluded that good quality fruits are produced in Romagna, although quality could be further improved.
