The use of a geo information system to support the demands of nature conservation at Deutsche Bahn

Die DB hat zahlreiche Berührungspunkte mit dem bundesdeutschen Naturschutzgesetz. So verlaufen zum Beispiel rund 800 Streckenkilometer durch Naturschutzgebiete. Neben geschützten Flächen sind geschützte Arten auch außerhalb von Schutzgebieten zu beachten. Die DB hat deshalb basierend auf einem Geografischen Informationssystem (GIS) ein naturschutzfachliches Instrument entwickelt. Darin werden relevante Daten, die zentral bei den zuständigen Behörden beschafft und aufbereitet werden, vorgehalten. Die Unternehmenseinheiten der DB - insbesondere deren Planer von Kleinprojekten und Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen - können diese Daten auf einfache Weise für die Beantwortung naturschutzfachlicher Fragestellungen für ihre Tätigkeiten nutzen. Die Verwendung dieser Daten wird anhand von zwei Beispielen vorgestellt.%Many fields of the nature conservation act of the Federal Republic of Germany concern the working areas of DB. For example, about 800 km of railway lines are located within nature conservation areas. Beside protected areas there are also certain species that are protected outside these areas. Therefore DB has developed a data processing tool based on a geographical information system (GIS) that is used for nature conservation purposes. This system includes relevant data, purchased from the authorities and centrally processed by DB. The business units of DB - especially planners of small scale projects and maintenance measures - can easily use these data to deal with the tasks of nature conservation. The use of those data will be shown within two examples.
