American exporters and importers anxious to improve their bottom lines are advised by government and private international trade experts to keep their eyes on Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), a region composed of 48 countries and 643 million people, nearly 10 percent of the world's population. There's no denying that the region has long been a marginal player in global trade―in the last two decades, Sub-Saharan Africa's share of world trade has fallen from 2 percent to less than one percent.
