Fluid Piping Software Helps Design Energy Efficient Pumping Stations

Rising energy costs and increasing demands for water and wastewater capacity from industrial and municipal users have created good reasons for design engineers to develop efficient designs and practices. Water and wastewater facilities consume an estimated 35% of energy used by municipalities. Users, suppliers, and designers in all industries, government agencies, and industry consortiums are developing and implementing strategies to improve the energy efficiency of industrial equipment. The potential savings are significant in most cases. A 1998 US Department of Energy market assessment of industrial motor-driven systems estimated an average savings of 11 to 18% with the implementation of energy efficient technologies and practices. Other studies, specifically of pumping systems, have indicated savings as much as 30 to 50%. Since pumping systems account for much of this energy consumed, design optimization can generate substantial energy savings.
