UK Coal Authority awards major mine treatment projects

In the United Kingdom, the Coal Authority awarded two new multi-million dollar awards to protect the nation's environment from polluted water from disused coal and metal mines. The Coal Authority is a public body funded by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) for work on coal liabilities and by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for its work on treating pollution from abandoned metal mining in England. The Coal Authority awarded Severn Trent Services a 10-year contract worth a minimum of US$37.38 to more than $74.77 million. Severn Trent Services will operate and maintain the Coal Authority's 82 mine water treatment schemes, pumping stations, and mine gas facilities in Britain (plus new schemes to be built in the future). These currently include pumped and passive (gravity) treatment systems, aeration processes, chemical dosing, settlement lagoons, and reed beds. They will also monitor more than 800 sites, taking readings of water levels and gas concentrations to track and control the wider effects of local mining.
