Climate change, population growth, and urbanization have caused water scarcity concerns in many European Union (EU) countries - particularly in the Mediterranean region and some Atlantic coastal areas - but a new rule aims to relieve the mounting pressure and mark a step toward a circular economy. The European Parliament adopted the new Water Reuse Regulation on May 13,2020. The law sets minimum requirements for reclaimed water to be used safely in agricultural irrigation. It applies to water reclaimed from wastewater conveyed in collection systems and then treated in urban water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs).
