The Los Angeles waste management program has come a long way since the days when residents sold food wastes to nearby hog farmers. Source separation was so unpopular in Los Angeles thirty years ago, that Sam Yorty won the mayor's office on a platform that eliminated it. Less than 20 years a-go, the city's waste management consisted of siting landfills in suitable canyons in the local mountains, and filling them with the city's waste. Today, managing the municipal solid waste stream of the second largest city in the United States is perhaps its most impressive public works challenge.
