A 5.3M-DIAMETER Robbins main beam TBM recently completed its 12.5km-drive on the Olmos Trans-Andean tunnel in Peru. The tunnel is part of a larger scheme that will transfer water from the Huancabamba River on the eastern side of the Andes to drought-ridden areas on the Pacific Ocean watershed. During its four-year journey, the machine has mined through extreme volcanic rock conditions and up to 2,000m of overburden; this created challenging rock stresses resulting in more than 16,000 rock burst events of which 17% were classified as 'severe.'
