Norway to build the world's first large ship tunnel

Norway is preparing to construct what has been hailed as the world's first large shipping tunnel that will allow cargo ships to by-pass a region of choppy seas and high winds. The Stad Maritime Tunnel will be designed to allow the maritime navigation of a treacherous section of the country's heavily fjorded south-west coast. Estimated to cost around US$270 million, the project is part of a 10-year transportation plan that was recently unveiled by the Norwegian government.
