London super sewer meets funding obstacle

London's so-called 'super sewer' - aka the Thames Tideway Tunnel - has been delayed at the starting blocks. Owner Thames Water has put the US$6.5 billion tender on hold due to uncertainties over government funding. The UK government, while initially enthusiastic over the scheme, has said it is only open to providing "contingent financial support for exceptional risks in the construction" of the project. In response, Phil Stride, head of London Tideway Tunnels at Thames Water, said: "We still need some assurances from government in relation to the funding model for the tunnel.
