When I mentioned to a fellow journalist that I was going to write a piece about tear tapes, he reacted with incredulity. "Tear tapes are small pieces of plastic," he said. "There's no story in that!" His reaction left me feeling uneasy because I have to admit that his opinion accorded with mine at the time. And my sense of foreboding was not eased when an interview with Mr Stephen Pinchen, the business development director of P P Payne, almost opened with the words, "Nobody really talks about tear tape and easy opening any more". I felt like a Formula I driver on being told that there was no fuel in his car. But all was not lost. Indeed, I discovered that I was entering the story of tear tapes at an interesting point. One phase, the establishment phase, has ended, and, hence, nobody is talking about it. But another, the development phase, is getting into full swing, and here the talk is almost deafening.
