摘要

USA: What will it cost to grow tobacco?rnUniversal Leaf said late in November that this year it will not offer its growers the fuel and delivery incentives that were in place in 2008.rn"The price reduction is a direct result of the projected decrease in the cost of production for the 2009 growing season," said George H Scott, the company's Vice President for leaf, in a letter to growers. "This reduction does not guarantee our export volumes will remain at... [2008's] level. But if we don't fairly reduce export prices, our 2009 contracted requirements could be reduced substantially."rnThe final outcome of this issue was by no means certain as December began. Farmer resistance to last season's initial offerings brought price concessions from most leaf buyers.
