This report covers several different air defense systems employing variants of the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile (see report). NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced SAM System) was a joint program by Hughes and Norsk Forsvarteknologi (NFT) to supplant Norway's existing Nike and Hawk batteries for site and airfield. The Royal Norwegian Air Force had a short-term requirement for 18 launchers and 108 missiles. The first production contract for the NASAMS was awarded by the Royal Norwegian Air Force in March 1994, and the system became operational in the spring of 1995. The NASAMS Ⅱ upgrade was funded in 2003. The first export award for NASAMS came in 2000, with Spain opting for the system to fulfill offset requirements from other purchases. Norway sold off six launchers to the Netherlands and has offered two more to Poland. Finland selected the NASAMS for its requirement in 2009 and Chile in 2010. The United States acquired at least one launch system for defense of Washington DC in the wake of the 11 September 2001 attacks.
