The Trident II (D-5) missile is the US Navy's latest submarine-launched strategic ballistic missile (SLBM). The D-5 is deployed aboard Ohio-class submarines (SSN-726). The Navy planned to buy 807 of the missiles for use aboard the last 10 (of 18) Ohio subs, but this dropped to 417 missiles in 1994 and rose again to 462 missile in FY95, decreasing to 425 in 1999, increasing to 540 in the F Y04 budget, and decreasing again in the FY05 budget to 425. FY05 was the last year of procurement funding for new D-5 missiles. Plans to retrofit the D-5 into the first eight subs equipped with the Trident I (C-4) were scrapped in the FY92 budget; this project resurfaced in 1994 but covers only four of the eight submarines instead.
