This report is an overview of the development of tactical ballistic missiles in the Third World not covered in other individual reports in the binder (Chinese TBMs, Prithvi, Agni). It focuses on efforts in North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan.rnNorth Korea is presently the main source of tactical ballistic missiles for most Third World armed forces. It produces a variety of Scud copies under the codename Hwasong. In recent years, it has been exporting a new missile called the No-Dong 1 by Western intelligence that is the basis for both the Pakistani Ghauri and Iranian Shahab-3. North Korea is also working on intermediate range missiles called the Taepo-Dong 1 and Taepo-Dong 2.rnIran test fired its Shahab-3 missile in July 1998, a derivative of the North Korean No-Dong 1. It is also working on an intermediate range missile called Shahab-4 that is apparently based on the old Soviet R-12 (SS-4)rnPakistan test fired its Ghauri missile in the spring of 1998, another derivative of the North Korean No Dong-1. It later fired its Shaheen missile derived from the Chinese M-11.
