The Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI) was a surface-to-air missile for the boost-phase intercept of ballistic missiles, part of the US Missile Defense Agency's boost phase missile defense program. The program started in earnest in December 2003 with the award of the KEI development contract to a team led by Northrop Grumman/Raytheon; the losing team was led by Lockheed Martin/Boeing. Raytheon was handling missile integration for the team while Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is handling the command and control.
