The Uninhabited Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) is the most futuristic application for UAVs. This is a revival of an old idea rather than an entirely new concept. The US Air Force conducted experiments using armed Firebee drones in the early 1970s and the Soviet Union had its own program in the early 1980s. France and Sweden began to examine UCAV technology in the late 1990s, and France attempted to take the lead in Europe in promoting a common UCAV effort.
