AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) is a USAF/USN medium-range AAM designed to replace the AIM-7 Sparrow (see report). It uses active radar guidance rather than semi-active and so has true fire-and-forget capabilities, the first time in a medium AAM.rnLow-rate initial production (LRIP/Milestone III A) go-ahead was given in June 1987 and full-rate production in April 1992. Original plans called for a total procurement level of 24,320 units. The current production objectives are 16,735 (12,274 USAF, 4,461 USN).
