The Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) is a joint US Air Force/Navy program to deploy a low-cost guided bomb suitable for use in adverse weather instead of laser-guided bombs. In October 1995, Boeing (now Boeing) was selected as the prime for the program's EMD phase. The JDAM received initial funding in the FY96 budget. Congress provided the Air Force with $25 million in supplementary FY95 funding to acquire 128 Northrop GAM-113 (GPS Aided Munition) 2,000-lb bombs to provide interim capability on the B-2A Spirit bomber. The first GAMs were fielded in July 1996.
