The RBS-23 BAMSE is a new Swedish air defense program to develop a medium altitude SAM to replace the old HAWK battalion currently in service. RBS-23 BAMSE is an attempt to develop an inexpensive missile, similar in size to contemporary SHORAD systems such as Roland and Crotale, but offering higher altitude performance. Project definition was completed in 1991, full scale engineering development began in 1992, and pre-series production was scheduled for 1998. The aim is to field a low cost system capable of engaging most tactical aircraft within a 15 km engagement envelope.
