AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) is a USAF/USN medium-range A AM designed to replace the AIM-7 Sparrow. It uses active radar guidance rather than semi-active and so has true fire-and-forget capabilities, the first time in a medium AAM. Low-rate initial production (LRIP/Milestone IIIA) go-ahead was given in June 1987 and full-rate production in April 1992. Original plans called for a total procurement level of 24,320 units. The current production objectives are 16,239 (11,778 USAF and 4,461 USN).
