MEADS

The Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) is intended as a multi-national NATO effort to develop a future divisional air defense system to replace existing systems such as the Patriot, and HAWK. The program absorbs the US Army's Corps SAM, and the German TLVS efforts. The program received approval at a November 1994 meeting of the Conference of National Armament Directors in Brussels and an agreement signed in December 1994. The original partners included the US, Germany, France and Italy, but France withdrew from the program due to budget problems. A new memorandum of understanding was signed by the three partners on 28 May 1996. In May 1999, Lockheed Martin was selected as the US prime for the three-year risk reduction phase.
