The Russian leather industry is growing and is held in high regard by the country's government. Twenty tanneries remain, compared with 50 at the end of the Soviet era in the early 1990s, and of those making leather in Russia now, the biggest five contribute 80% of the country's total volume. National leather industry association, PCKO, says there has been "modest but steady recovery and growth in recent years". Surviving leather manufacturers have been able to grow their output from a combined value of around $175 million in 2010 to a figure closer to $970 million in 2016.
