China's SIPO Initiates New Patent Law Amendments

After last amending its patent law in 2008 for only the third time in its 20 plus years of patent law history, China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) is somewhat surprisingly initiating a new round of patent law amendments. According to state media, SIPO had held a high-level meeting in July 2012 seeking comments on the new amendments. The attendees included field experts and officials from the legislature - the National People's Congress (NPC) Commission for Education, Science, Culture, and Health, the NPC Standing Committee Legislative Affairs Committee, and the State Council Legislative Affairs Office as well as local intellectual property offices, universities, businesses, and patent agency representatives.
