The recent public consultation on the revision of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) guidance on scientific requirements for health claims related to gut and immune function was long-awaited by manufacturers who wished to submit applications with higher chances of success. However, even if EFSA has made few concessions, this update will not significantly change the situation. EFSA still refuse any pre-submission meeting or to give its opinion on specific points (accepted population, health relationship, outcomes, etc.) without any specific application; two points that are frequently requested by applicants. Nevertheless, a feature of this publication is that some aspects of the management of health claims by EFSA have been clarified.
