The new Lyons-Turin rail link will pass through the French Alps and will therefore require drilling several tunnels, the largest of which is the so-called base tunnel 52.6 km long, a double-tube structure in its definitive version, accepting high-speed train traffic, freight trains and trains transporting commercial vehicles. In accordance with the treaty following on from the Summit of 29 January 2001, the French and Italian governments have decided to undertake a research programme from 2001 to 2006, involving initial design and reconnaissance by galleries for the base tunnel. Work has begun on the decline and reconnaissance gallery of Modane/Vil-larodin-Bourget tunnel.
