Human kind has always found a way to built and work at height, continuously pushing the limits and creating higher cities, factories, buildings etc. A recent evolution of this history has been the growing relationship between work at height and a sensibility to safer working conditions. Falls from height continue to be the second highest cause of death and injury for all industrial workers and the first cause for construction work, highlighting the importance of regulation and its evolution to ensure the safety of a large number of workers worldwide. As a major actor of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) industry, and particularly, of the Fall Protection world, the Bacou-Dalloz group describes in this article some of the major facts of the history of Fall Protection. It focuses on France, using the experience of three of its European organisations particularly active in this country: Antec, Soell and Miller-hornet. This article brings to light how the evolution of regulations and the technical know-how of pioneering fall protection companies are closely linked. Their interaction leads to the emergence of a real industrial know-how applied to safety at height.
