After several years of planning, Foss Maritime, Seattle, is about to expand its newbuild shipyard in Rainier, Ore., and begin construction of three Arctic-class tugs. The 7,268-hp, 130'×41'×20' twin-screw tugs will be built to American Bureau of Shipping Al and Ice-class requirements and be SOLAS certified. The three tugs will also be built to Green Passport rules. The Rainier shipyard, located on the Columbia River about 50 miles from Portland, has been busy for much of the past 10 years building Dolphin-class tugs for its parent company.
