Since Hurricane Sandy the insurance industry — in particular the ocean marine insurance industry — has become less friendly when it comes to claims handling. As a result, I've taken some steps to help my clients through the daunting task of handling a vessel or property claim. First, it appears that claim departments are under order to scrutinize all claims and to take every opportunity to minimize or eliminate payments on claims. Also, some claims people are misinterpreting what the policy says. I don't know if this is because of a lack of knowledge or training or standing orders.
